ESPN Looking to Expand Esport Coverage Because of The International

July 29, 2014
The recent coverage of The International 4 went so well for ESPN that this US sports network is thinking about branching out further into esports. According to DailyDot, "ESPN were delighted" with the results from the Dota 2 tournament, although no official viewer numbers were released.

"ESPN have seen enough recent successes with e-sports and are about to double down," said a source close to ESPN. "The numbers they hit with The International have only cemented the view that the time is right."

The appearance of Dota 2 on ESPN is another proof of the current esport boom and its impact on entertainment mainstream. DailyDot's source states that ESPN is now talking to Major League Gaming with deals to cover Call of Duty events on both their TV and web services, and plans for other games are in "preliminary stages."

While this bodes well for mainstream coverage of esports, it remains to be seen if it will be a one time thing or will it expand into something more permanent.

Thanks, DailyDot.
