Despite the fact that kickstarting games today isn't as lucrative as it was a couple of years ago, there are still projects that manage to get funded far above the initial goals. The latest success story is
BattleTech, developed by Harebrained Schemes, the studio behind Shadowrun Returns and its sequels. BattleTech is a tactical turn based mech combat game set in the universe of the same name, made famous by the MechWarrior franchise.
Battletech's original funding goal of $250,000 was broken in under one hour, followed by $1 million stretch goal just a few days later. This also means that the game will be getting a full single player campaign on launch. With 33 days of funding to go, Battletech could very well achieve its stage 4 stretch goal: the PVP multiplayer mode.
Unlike some developers that hype their first Kickstarter projects and over-promise features that never get delivered, Harebrained Schemes consistently successfully fund and release their games using crowdfunding. Battletech will be their fourth project coming out via KS, after Shadowrun Returns, Golem Arcana and Shadowrun: Hong Kong. It is expected to launch on PC, Mac and Linux in early 2017.
