Guild Wars 2 PvP First Impressions

NewsBy Josh "RageGamingVideos" Bell, 05/01/201257477

Welcome to my original Guild Wars 2 Beta coverage series where I take each class, join a PvP battle and see how well I can do with zero knowledge of the class. It makes for some interesting discoveries.

I decide to start this series with the Ranger class, I want to see how Guild Wars 2 pulls of the classic hunter in a PvP scenario, does the pet help or hinder? Do you need to rely on it or is it just a bonus? And lastly, of course, is the class fun and powerful? The answers to these questions are all pleasently suprising.

As you can see, on top of this being my first PvP experience on the Ranger it is my first PvP experience of Guild Wars 2 and before I go onto to specifically PvP related information I feel I need to talk about the game as a whole for a little bit.

The game, put simply, is stunning. The hype is not just hype. The questing is groundbreaking, the graphics are stunning and the combat is engaging and fun. I will save going into detail until my complete overview of the game, but as you can probably tell I was incredibly exited to try out the very promising PvP.

And so we return to the Ranger and my first experience of PvP. Let me talk about the map and how it plays out first, the game mode is capture the point but that hardly does it justice. There is so much going on, from trebuchets to epic battles to desctructable terrain. Imagine this scenario and you try and tell me it does not sound epic; you see the enemy has captured the clock tower and you are at your base, you decide to leap of the side of your base and land on the roof of a building, you run across from rooftop to rooftop until you get within range of the clock tower, you then teleport up to the scaffolding and stand infront of one of the windows. You break the window down with an arrow or spell and procede to jump through the smashed window and land in the middle of the group of enemies and unleash a massive area of effect attack sending them all flying. That is commonplace in Guild Wars 2 PvP.

Now to the combat and feel of PvP in general, due to the combat system fights are very fast paced and visceral, you feel powerful but not immortal and you have the ability to turn a fight into a win or loss. 1v1's are incredibly fun and truly rely on player skill and not class rock paper series as in some other games. I spent 7 minutes fighting a guardian on my engineer before finally taking him down and the entire time it was intense and thrilling. The graphics and dynamic nature of the PvP are the icing on the cake and round out the entire experience into the best epxerience in PvP I have ever had in any MMO.

Finally onto the Ranger specifically, I was skeptical at first not being a fan of having pets in MMO's but my fear quickly washed away, I was using the 2h sword and longbow as my weapon choices and they were incredibly fun to use and very easy to pick up on the fly which is good for a first impressions video. The longbow has some powerful shots and some amazing aoe that you can use to devastate big fights where as the sword contains 5 very effective 1v1 moves that I use to beat players who try and kill me as I travel the map. Now finally to the pet, the pet is actually a very helpful asset and at no point do you feel reliant on it or do you feel it gets in the way, its just plain awesome, the damage it does is nice and on top of that it can revive you when you are downed, what more do you want? Overall I was very impressed with this class, to the point where I am considering rolling one on launch.

Thanks for reading and watching, my name has been Rage, I will see you next time!

PvP battles battles is a very important part of any MMO project. GW2 has interesting Player vs Player combats. As for me I like it more than PvE.

I love PVP in GW2. For me, every bit as good as in original GW... even better. :)

Have something to say? Bring it on!
