DOTA 2 Offline Support
Will Valve follow Blizzard and S2 Games and refuse offline support?
This thread is dedicated to what features will DOTA 2 give while offline; i.e. when there is not any active connection to the internet.
Icefrog has already stated
that the game will have a single player mode. He said that you will be
able to play on your own or with friends and have AI Bots filling the
rest of the slots for a game. Also, he said that there will be specially
crafted challenge scenarios, something like Pudge Wars, included in the
game. All this is very interesting and indeed promising for both new
players and addicted people who just want to practice more. What this
answer does not clearly state is whether these features will be
available offline.
The reason I am going through this is that recently, there has been a lot of discussions around the reasons S2
chooses not to make HoN available offline as well. S2 has said that it
has to do with the soundness of the game and its protection against
hacking and free playing of the game in local servers - a scenario that
has been supported by Blizzard as well with StarCraft
II. In any case, there are some viable arguments as to why to do it and I
can understand the decision. Let’s not forget that broadband internet
connections have evolved a lot and are spreading all over the world and
from our experience with other games of the genre, DOTA 2 will not be
heavy on our bandwidth. All in all, the question is a viable one but I
believe that Valve, too, will choose to avoid any offline use of the
game, an argument that is supported by the fact that the game will be on
Steam.
What do you think? Would you like DOTA 2 to be playable offline as well,
to be able to play LAN games, without internet, with your friends? Or
is it something that you feel will not really affect you since internet
is everywhere nowadays?
