Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick doubts the financial success of Electronic Arts' upcoming MMO.

Bobby Kotick, Activision Blizzard CEO, talked to Reuters about his thoughts on the soon-to-be-released Star Wars: The Old Republic, the MMO published by Activision's biggest competitor - Electronic Arts.

"Lucas is going to be the principal beneficiary of the success of Star Wars," Kotick told Reuters. "We've been in business with Lucas for a long time and the economics will always accrue to the benefit of Lucas, so I don't really understand how the economics work for Electronic Arts."

"If you look at the history of the people investing in an MMO and achieving success, it's a small number," concluded Kotick.

On the other hand. EA claims that the game could be profitable with 500,000 users, calling the game a "10 Year Opportunity"

Star Wars: The Old Republic is now in beta and launches on December 20.

Meanwhile, Blizzard's World of Warcraft is still the king of subscription MMOs. Despite a substantial loss of customers lately, WoW still has 10 million paying subscribers.

I don't think EA should get their hopes up for this game.

Played the beta, first quests and storyline till lvl 10 are really good, it feels as if you were playing a single player rpg, but after you leave the starting location, the queues for dungeons and battlegrounds starts, taking more quests from NPCs...
It is a good game, but it's just another mmo, similar to WoW in a lot, maybe even better, but who cares, if it's similar...
People need something totally new, something different, something fresh - copying and upgrading a sold idea, which is slowly decreasing in popularity is not the way you want to choose if you want to succeed..

Edit: at least that's not the way for MMOs - which are, truth be told, the hardest market in gaming genres to be succesful in...

m4dfan, you ditched a game because of the graphics? That is just... awful. Graphics don't really matter that much. Still not a fan of the gameplay for these kind of online game.
