Heroes of Newerth Could Become a Free to Play Title
S2 Games is thinking of changing business model in response to DotA 2 release
Gamasutra did an interview with Marc 'Maliken' DeForest where they discussed Heroes of Newerth game and the current games payment model and how S2 Games is thinking to change it to a free-to-play business model. Marc said that current payment system has mostly affected HoN's playerbase when you compare their game to League of Legends that has a distinct advantage in terms of attracting more and more players then HoN does. S2 Games decision of changing the business model was most likely pushed by an announcement of DotA 2 since S2 Games is looking how to stay on market after DotA 2's release.
"With the RMT shop, we've got a lot of additions that should go in a
patch within the next 45 days or so. We want to flush that out and get
it to a point where our average revenue per user lets us look at the
possibility of a different business model."
They have also discussed an amount of players that currently log into HoN on daily basis and an activity of the player base.
"Right now, about 40 percent of our active player base logs in every day, which I find to be absolutely awesome," S2 CEO Marc DeForest tells Gamasutra. "To have almost half of your players log in once a day seems amazing, and shows the dedication of the HoN players."
