EXCLUSIVE TRUTH ABOUT SONY. (only on gamersbook.com)

An investigative report uncovers the truth about PSN.

EXCLUSIVE TRUTH ABOUT SONY. (only on gamersbook.com) Blog image

THE TRUTH ABOUT PSN.

Today I called 1-800-345-7669 and had a very interesting conversation with one of the Sony representatives.

I was able to gain his trust within a few minutes into our conversation by just being myself. I wasn't proper, but I also wasn't too outrageous. (At first)

His name was Robert, and he would NOT give me his extension number- when I asked for it at the end of our conversation- . I don't blame him, The shit he told me would for sure get him fired.

It all happened like this:

I drank 7 beers and called Sony, The first 3 times I called, females answered the phone and (after being on hold for a long time) I hung up on all 3 of them.

I had my speech prepared for a man, NOT a woman.

The 4th time I called; a man named: ROBERT answered. The first thing he asked was if I was calling about the PSN being offline. I answered:

"No, I am calling because I am so bored without PSN, that I need someone to talk to"

He started laughing and told me PSN would be up as soon as possible and that they were working around the clock to fix it.

I said to him that I already knew that, and that I was calling in hopes of getting a little more than just: "We appreciate your patience"

I told him I was a writer and  a  -down to earth- son of a bitch. He asked me what I wrote about. I mentioned I worked for Gamersbook.com and I went over a bit of CALL OF BOOTY and OFF DUTY BLACK COPS.

He started laughing at the titles.

It didn't take long before I had him cracking jokes back and trying his best to befriend me. I started coughing.. He asked:

"Are you smoking?"

I said: "Yes"

And he was once again laughing.

Then, something insane happened.

He asked me for my contact number and said he would call me back. I gave it to him and said to myself: "I'm never going to hear from this fukker again, I know it."

Halfway down my 9th beer I received an incoming call from a "Private Number"... I answered.

It was Robert. He said he was on his lunch break and wanted to tell me stuff that he couldn't say while at work because they monitor the calls.

Here is the exclusive stuff he told me and I am sure he is reading this now.

First of all... Stop checking every 5 minutes if PSN is back on. It won't be back on today.

When I asked when they will bring it up he said it could take another week, but that they are working around the clock to try and make it sooner.

I asked him why Sony doesn't at least give us a window of time frame -NOT EXACT TIME- but just a window..

He said that Sony didn't want to say from the beginning that it could be 2 weeks or more, because once we had that info, and specially during a school holiday week break, That gamers would say they couldn't wait 2 weeks and that they would go buy an Xbox 360.

I asked him if Anonymous was responsible for the outage.

He said NO.

Then, he told me something interesting and EXCLUSIVE:

He said that Sony had been planning for a few months now, To re-design their infrastructure and that their only worry was how to bring down the PSN without a warning and still be able to keep their customers. The solution: "To suggest they are as puzzled as WE ARE, and let us blame hackers."

But the truth was that the only hacking involved was that a group found out that you could enter a Fake Credit Card info and that Sony wasn't verifying the cards and so a few users were able to get a bunch of stuff from the Playstation Store for free.

I asked him why they didn't just bring down the store.

He said , Because they were already planning on re-design the whole PSN.

He said that nobody's credit card or personal info was compromised, and once again mentioned that the only hacking done was stolen movies and games from PS Store by a small group of users and that someone had posted a video online with instructions on -How to do it-.

So Sony pulled the plug and decided to let us think that Anonymous had done it.

He told me that The hack that stole stuff from PS Store was a custom Firmware nicknamed: "REBUG"

THAT IS THE TRUTH AND YOU'RE HEARING IT FIRST FROM GAMERSBOOK'S ALIZEHENNESSY.

I have mixed emotions right now. First of all, I DONT understand what part of my report, you guys dont believe.

    1) SONY took down the site voluntarily. (NOT the Hackers)

    2) They knew it could take weeks and did not tell us because some of us would not wait that long to play and we would go xbox360.

    3) The hack did not take the PSN down, all it did was a custom firmware that allowed the user to appear as a SONY developer and could enter a fake credit card number and download stuff for free.

    4) Some  ps store content was downloaded (stolen) with this hack.

    5) I drank 9 beers.

Please be a dear and tell me which of these you guys dont believe. (not that I give a shit, I just want to see how foolish you look)

Now to try and say your lying about something like this is kinda lame. Why would some one do that. If they dont get the information and do your homework dont open your mouth.. The mysterious hacker collective that goes by the name Anonymous sent an ominous threat towards Sony for abusing "the judicial system in an attempt to censor information," and for victimizing its customers for merely "possession and sharing information."

The threat read: "Now you will experience the wretch of Anonymous. Expect us." It turns out they weren't playing. According to various reports, the group is responsible for today's shutdown of Sony's Playstation Network and of the Playstation.com website.

The threat came after Sony decided to take strict legal action against hacker George Hotz. Hotz, known online as Geohot, is best known for being the first to unlock Apple's iPhone. He wound up on Sony's radar after he "jailbroke" his Playstation 3 so it would run unauthorized games and software, and shared the instructions to do so.

The group ANONYMOUS had first promised us (PS Users) that they would not attack customers... But today those bastards went back on their word.

The Playstation Network is shut down and I can't play my Black Ops or MW2 as planned.

Gamersbook has been hearing widespread reports that the PlayStation Network is currently down in numerous regions, including Australia.

Currently we’re having difficulties signing into the Network, and it appears that we are not alone.

Apparently Sony is aware of the issue and is currently working on a fix.

"We're aware certain functions of PlayStation Network are down," claimes a post on the US Playstation Blog. "We will report back here as soon as we can with more information.

    "Thank you for your patience."

Thank me for my patience?... What patience?.. I AM PISSED OFF!.

    TELL US THE TRUTH...

Anonymous claims it has successfully carried out a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on Playstation.com, the Playstation store and the Playstation Network . However a hardcore splinter faction of Anonymous has also emerged with plans to go after Sony executives, employees and their families.

Previously Anonymous had focused on companies rather than individuals, although ACS Law's founder Andrew Crossley and HBGary Federal CEO Aaron Barr were personally tormented by the group. However the Anonymous offshoot calling itself Sony Recon is targeting not only high-ranking Sony employees but wants to gather information on their families.

One report claims that the Sony Recon group has Published private details regarding Robert Wiesenthal, a group executive of Sony Corporation. It also claims that one Anonymous member asked, "No one found ANY info on Stringers kids?", referring to Sony CEO Howard Stringer.

Aside from Sony websites, the Anonymous also took down the website of the law firm handling Sony's PLAYSTATION jailbreaking lawsuit against Hotz.

Sony was not willing to say whether downtime on the Playstation Network was due to actions by Anonymous, simply saying:

"We are currently investigating issues with PlayStation Network, our engineers are working to restore and maintain the services, and we appreciate our customers' continued support.

    Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

    1. Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
    2. Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
    3. Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a “fraud alert” on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

True MOGURL.. it is amazing that this dude still wants to say that Sony would not take down the site without notice..

    Look at what he wrote:

" i jus know the statistics on this shit and theres no way in the history of nigadom that a empire like sony would just shut down without notice man i dont care how u got ur info"

    What a noob.

Oh and by the way... You can continue to copy/paste shit you see on the web. and believe in it. I rather believe what I heard from a human being.

Go to sony community blogs.. read and get educated before you get opinionated.

(I have always respected everyone's opinion on here, but this is just ridiculous)

    Apr 26 2011

Update on PlayStation Network and Qriocity

+ Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

"Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the current outage of PlayStation Network & Qriocity services. We are currently working to send a similar message to the one below via email to all of our registered account holders regarding a compromise of personal information as a result of an illegal intrusion on our systems. These malicious actions have also had an impact on your ability to enjoy the services provided by PlayStation Network and Qriocity including online gaming and online access to music, movies, sports and TV shows. We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week. "

DO YOU SEE THAT?  it says WITHIN A WEEK! Just like Robert told me.

Titan, you just made an ass out of yourself and your stubbornness was the source. What are you going to say now?. That sony is lying?

SONY is aware that I posted this... Someone visited gamersbook and posted my report on page 158 of their official blog. And now they finally give a time frame.

(within a week, just like I said)

GOD it feels good to read that.

    SOURCE: http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/04/26/update-on-playstation-network-and-qriocity/

(PS- This is from the same page that he copy/pasted earlier but for some reason chose to leave that out.)
(I have all the connections in the world and I'll be dammed if I let a noob like you come here and try to discredit me)

  • alizehennessy

    alizehennessy, 04/27/2011

Same here bro. We are all a bit pissed off. And knowing that our personal info is now in the hands of hackers is a major reason to be easily irritated.

The hackers DID NOT take down the PSN.. Sony did that. Its what I was told and what I KNOW.

The hackers did manage to steal stuff including our info. So, I was never mad at sony for pulling the plug, (everyone knows that) If sony had said to us,"Hey we shutdown the psn because your personal info has been compromised.. we wold've been grateful for it and would've appreciated the honesty and security.

But that's not what they did.. Instead they lied to us and said that it was maintenance.. Waited til I post my report to finally tell us the truth and most of us have the same password or security question for all our shit, So for 6 days we could've been changing it so our other cards and log ins wouldn't be affected.

But they lied. They tried their best to cover it up and now that the cat is out of the bag.. Now they are saying: "Yes, your info has been stolen and in the hands of hackers for the last 6 days"

THAT is what I was talking about. The only thing that Robert was wrong about was that our info DID get stolen. But I dont blame him... Sony probably did not even tell their customer service guys this in fear of a leak.

I was mad because they lied to us.. They said it was scheduled maintenance and those who have been following the story since day one, know that as well.

It was the reason I called Sony, because they were lying. But the cat is out of the bag now, and a bit of coincidence that a day after I post my report, It appears on the playstation blog official site, and then suddendly Sony admits all this shit and actually give us a time frame. (within a week)

Thank you Robert (for being honest and speaking to me)

And as for Titan, dont worry, WE ARE ALL MAD. (but not at eachother)

  • JaggyD

    JaggyD, 04/27/2011

Mad, yes very mad. I have changed most of my passwords. Top of the list was my credit card log ins and of course my bank account. I contacted the 3 credit bureaus for the fraud alert deal. I am thinking maybe I will just have American express issue a new card and account number. I know there are security breach laws that give companies a limited time to notify their customers. Could sony have problems there? Maybe. As I stated earlier Sen. Blumenthal contacted Sony about their possible failure in notifying its customers in a timely manner. It doesn't look good for Sony right now. But still, with all of this going on, all I care about is getting back online.

  • alizehennessy

    alizehennessy, 04/27/2011

Exactly, JAGGY. The whole point I was trying to make was that even though they took  the network down voluntarily because they knew they had been hacked..They pretended that they didnt know what was going on and They lied to us and kept it a secret for 6 days.. Those were 6 days we couldve contacted our banks and changed our account passwords and security questions.

They Flat out told us it was maintenance.

    That is unacceptable.

Im sorry.. But who the hell are you to be saying he cant comment.. Crimson and Alize are best friends and the last time I checked Alize was the one who wrote the blog.. You dont have the right to say who can comment and who can not.. Crimson is not only one of the most social people I know but he is a man he admits when he is wrong and doesn't have a problem with it.. His deffinition of a "wigger" is exactly what it means. I dont think you should be allowed to comment any more because your "lack of socialism." Plus if you want to "ban" someone do it in the right blog.. FYI this is not the blog to be banning people.

    Yeah!

Alize is taking credit for good journalism while spreading Sony's corporate PR and You are just swallowing it as if You had no brains. Everybody here is clapping hands because You want to believe it. You want to believe nothing happened. It stinks for miles away.

    Let's think:

    1. According to Alize's story Sony decided to blame hackers for network outage and keeps silent for several days after it's down. Anger and tension rises, and then first releases start to appear, some of them are contradictionary, making the situation blurry and confusing. Looks like REALLY well prepared operation.

    2. If what Alize says is true, Sony decided to flush their stock index down with the drain, spread hate and rage across Facebook and Twitter, lose clients unsure of their identities and credit cards numbers just to switch to new server architecture - instead of preparing migration the proper way, preceded with a polite annoucnement asking for patience and forbearance during network outage. Usually, good PR requires companies to give away something in return, but this would not definitely make much harm to their sales. Few free games that Sony has plenty of would be less cost.

    3. What would be the motivation of a guy called Robert to call afterhours and explain situation? Liking acquired during short conversation? Alize's contribution to Gamersbook community? Not likely.

Guys, I understand psychologic need to calm down and this kind of information is what You expect, but for god's sake - be critical in what You read.

If you don't believe Alize , it is your choice and noone can push your decision but ask yourself, why did Alize wrote about Huge PSN update 48hours before anyone else did?

What alize started to write about 2 days ago, gaming portals are writing today. Obviously alize story pushed some PR dudes to release the info:

Hahaha, either he's bullshitting or that guy had him on.

So he's saying that Sony instead of just making an announcement that there was going to be a maintanence period while they updated the infrastructure which may cause some annoyance and inconveniance, they decided to claim they got hacked and people's details were stolen causing them to lose trust and respect for Sony and the PSN.

    I don't think so...

WOW.. You totally missed the point.

I will explain again for the Last Time:

PSN did NOT get taken down by hackers... SONY took it down Voluntarily.. If you had kept up with the story since day one/ You would know that Sony First said It was "Scheduled Maintenance" and then later said they didnt know what was going on... They left us in the dark for 6 days. Even though they knew.

They wanted us to believe it was Anonymous.. That didnt work out.

It was after I posted my report and Someone posted it on PS Community Blog, That SONY came clean with the truth.

Second: Robert mentioned that NO credit card info had been compromised... That proved to be false later, and I EXPLAINED that maybe he WASNT lying... That MAYBE SONY had NOT Trusted their own customer service people with this info in fear of a leak.

Im getting tired of explaining this shit.. Im taking a break. fukk.
