Foolish or not?
Beta keys for dota 2 are sold every day. If u buy one does it makes u a fool?
All of us would like to have access to beta phase of Valve's DotA 2, but since beta severs can't support large amount of players, only 20-30k people can play DotA 2. So, if you didn't get a key, don't feel bad, many others don't have keys also. But, there are a lot of people who got more than one key, more than 10 gifts. They sell them. Since DotA 2 should be F2P, they are earning some serious bucks. Now, you ask yourself should you buy a key? If you can afford it, why not, but if you can't, you should wait for your chance to win one. Also, if you think that you are perspective player who could achieve something, you should buy it too. But if you never played wc3 dota, I don't see any reason to spend your money. I wish you best of luck for winning a key.

That is right!
One guy who never play WC3 and if you ask him about axe,mage and how to do last hit why valve should give him key?
